Screen Screams July 22, 2006

We had to make a warranty claim on one of our 20″ TFT monitors on Friday - not too unusual except that this is the second time we’ve claimed on this same model and the third in total within a year. It’s not a generic, unbranded one either, but from one of the biggest names.

Anyone else had a high failure rate with TFTs, I’d be interested to hear. Ventilation has always been fine, power supply is protected etc, so it’s a bit of a mystery.

I even suspected at one stage that the last warranty replacement unit was actually refurbished rather than new, as there seemed to be a tiny mark on the painted surface of the bezel that had been “touched-in” with silver paint, but that could just be paranoia(!). Again, if anyone has experience of that, please post a comment.

The replacement should be here early next week - in the mean time I’m toying with the idea of switching back to good old CRTs. Bigger, hotter, less green, less cool, less warranty claims.
