Snow Stops Play March 3, 2006
Fairly manic week this week, not helped by the unexpected snowfall, which has been quite heavy for these parts. So much so in fact that the usual 10 minute drive into town turned into a 50 minute crawl, as all southbound traffic was diverted onto the only passable major road south.
Having lost effectively the best part of two hours yesterday I failed miserably to update, but at least had time to test the new voice recorder whilst sat stationary in traffic!
Overall it is a very good piece of kit. The size of a fairly small mobile, it’s compact and light enough to fit into a pocket without being noticed. Recording time is up to 90 minutes and files can be sorted into three folders - up to 100 files per folder. When linked to the PC you can edit, move and delete your files quite easily. Range/sensitivity can be adjusted to allow for recording up to 6m away for lectures etc., but I fear the sound quality would suffer as to get the full 90 minutes recording time quoted you would need to use the low quality setting - high quality only stretches to 22 minutes. The next model up the range, the DW-360, would suit this purpose better as it can handle up to six hours.Having said that, 22 minutes of blog memo space would last me quite a while at the moment.
The small green-backlit LCD screen is useful and easy to navigate and the whole machine automatically turns off after an hour of not being used. A number of other functions such as filing by date-order (in the third folder) and the ability to fast-play through a file make it really quite versatile. In short, more than up to the task of memo taking and light years away from the old tape based dictaphones we used only a few years ago.
