Payback Time February 24, 2006
When I checked the main website this morning I was very pleasantly surprised to see that our Google PR had risen to 4. All those hours plugging away submitting to hundreds of directories and optimising for keywords seems to be paying off.
This has been the first time I’ve been involved with the website at this level and I must admit I was totally unprepared for the level of blind faith required when putting in the time on directory submissions and my attempts at SEO. There are absolutely no hard and fast “terms of engagment”. No guarantees regarding if and when the submissions will be reviewed and whether or not they will be accepted; how Google’s latest algorithm will interpret your new inbound links, keyword density, metatags and so forth and what weight it will attach to them. Over what timescale will these efforts be rewarded?
Although there is clearly a very exact series of mathematical operations at work within the search engines spurring us all on in our efforts at SEO, sitting in front of a monitor in supplication to Google et al, what we experience on this side of the TFT can feel more like taking on a new religion - not least because it is quite possibly a lifelong experience, with an uncertain outcome but one that we believe can improve our quality of life during the journey.
After today at least, I’m still a believer.
